Description
HISTORY OF ALOHA GOLF CLUB

The construction of the course started at the beginning of 1973. The course designer was Javier Arana, who was the designer of many courses including El Saler. Aloha was the last project of Javier Arana, as he died in January 1975, just as the course was about completed.

One of the interesting things which he did was to discuss the variety of trees to be planted with top agriculturists and planted trees in a sequence which allowed them to blossom at differing times ensuring blossom throughout the year.

The actual course construction was carried out by Ibergolf. On 25th October 1975 the clubhouse was completed. The first official ball played was driven by Mr. Angel de la Riva, Presidente de la Federación Andaluza de Golf.

As the Club began to develop, it had its own atmosphere which is now enjoyed by its members of over 20 nationalities. This Club has hosted many famous people such as D. Juan de Borbón –King Juan Carlos’ father, Prince Klaus of Holland, el Prince Edward from England and the King of Malasia.

We have also hosted several prestigious tournaments such as the Spanish Amateur Championship in 1978 and the Spain v England amateur match in 1993. In 2007 Aloha hosted the European PGA Tour Open de Andalucía, with Lee Westwood as winner establishing a new course record in 65 strokes. In 2008 the Open de Andalucía returned to Aloha. This time the winner was the frenchman Thomas Levet.

Aloha Golf Club was run for its early years by Banco de Bilbao and the par three course was added by Mr. Enrique Canales, who is one of our Honorary members, together with the professional players Mr. Diego Borrego and Mr. Miguel Angel Jiménez.

In March 1983 IBSA came to the end of its real estate. One thousand five hundred shares were then issued which were originally destined for 1200 house owners and the balance to existing players and members.

This took a little while to take effect and it was not until January 1986 that the first Assembly of shareholders was held to choose its own board. The first President was Mr. José María Ibarrondo who was on mandate for 5 years, followed by the Count of Perlac, 7 years and Mr. Colin Sheppard who took over for 3 years. Since 1999 Mr. Richard Katz has been the President, until 2008 when the presidency was taken by Dr. Jose Ignacio Abad Rico who is working together with tan enthusiastic Board of Directors in the continuous improvement of the course and club.

Aloha is not a long course, except for certain holes such as the 1st, 4th, 13th and 18th, but it needs precision and particularly on these holes also strength. It is an estrategic course with
